Luminaria

Luminaria is December 17. Do your part for the district. Stop by the RAP house located at 2623 Herschel Street any Saturday or Sunday and help bagging sand and making the kits for Luminaria. An hour or two of your time will go a long way. You'll meet your neighbors and make new friends. It is great fun.

Luminaria 2007 requires re-thinking. Luminaria 2006 became victim of its own success.

The magic of the night is losing its special qualities.

Our neighborhoods cannot support the parking needs for the scores of private Luminaria parties or even those who come to park and walk.

The enormous number of motoring visitors, scores of children throwing (not tossing) candy, intermixed with cyclists, horse-drawn carriages and makeshift floats created a serious public safety threat this year.

The charm, beauty of the night and religious significance of the night are slipping into a Mardi Gras atmosphere. Jingle bells are giving way to revelers with tractor-trailer air horns.

The illumination cast by thousands of flickering Luminaria is obscured by uninterrupted lines of curbside parked cars.

The Riverside Avondale Luminaria is now a regional tradition; no longer just a neighborhood event. It is a tradition that should continue but one whose success cannot continue unchecked.

I thought it was very sad that RAP was promoting Luminaria and yet when we walked by the RAP house there were no bags set up, completely dark. Everyone thought it was funny that you guys were promoting it so much, yet don't set up any candles in front of the building.
