RAP is proud to partner with the Jacksonville Historical Society and the local chapter of the American Institute of Architects in presenting the East Coast premier of the award-winning film, Louis Sullivan: The Struggle for American Architecture.
Louis H. Sullivan was one of the most influential architects to come out of the Chicago School of architecture in the late 1800s. Often called the “father of the skyscraper” and the “prophet of modern architecture,” Sullivan conceived the most famous phrase ever to come out of his profession, “form follows function” (or, more accurately, “form ever follows function”). He was committed to establishing an authentic, American style of architecture, free of historic imitations like the Beaux Arts style that had become wildly popular as a result of the World’s Columbian Exposition of 1893.
His architecture, a mixture of plain geometry and undisguised massing punctuated with elaborate pockets of ornamentation in stone, wood and terra cotta, had a profound impact on Frank Lloyd Wright, who mentored under Sullivan. Henry J. Klutho's work on Jacksonville's City Hall clearly shows Sullivan's influence as well.
Please join us at the historic Five Points Theater on Sunday, July 18th for an exclusive screening of this outstanding film. Two shows are scheduled: 2pm and 7pm. Tickets are $15 if you Buy Them Now, and $18 at the door.
